Buttercream Icing and Royal Icing
1/2 cup solid shortening | 4 cups powdered sugar |
1/2 cup butter | 2 Tblsp milk |
1 tsp vanilla | |
3 egg whites at room temp | 4 cups powdered sugar |
1 tsp cream of tartar |
Buttercream: Cream 1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 cup butter with mixer; add 1 tsp vanilla. Gradually add 4 cups powdered sugar one cup at a time beating well on medium. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy. Royal: Beat egg whites, 4 cups powdered sugar, and cream of tartar at high speed for 7 to 10 minutes. Use immediately.
