Steamed Carrot Pudding

1 cup sugar | 1 tsp soda |
1 cup flour | 1 tsp salt |
1 cup shredded potato | 1 tsp baking powder |
1 cup shredded carrots | 2 cups raisins |
1 egg | 1/3 cup shortening |
Cream sugar with shortening; add egg and beat. Add shredded potatoes and carrots, then dry ingredients, flavorings (1/2 tsp each of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg; and nuts to taste), and raisins. Steam until done. (A double boiler with steam vents around the top works well). DIP: Brown 1 cup sugar; take off stove and add 2 cups water and 1 cup sugar. Stir until it cools a little. Return to stove and stir until it is melted. Sift in 3 Tblsp flour and add 1/2 cube butter. Cook until it thickens. Add 1/2 tsp each of salt and vanilla.
